HOLLY NEAR
“ Holly is a divine mix of Pete Seeger and Judy Garland!”
Holly Near is an outspoken activist, singer, teacher, and recording
artist and has spent the past 35 years working for progressive political
and social change. Holly Near is a unique combination of entertainer,
teacher and activist. An immense vocal talent, Near's career as a singer
has been profoundly defined by an unwillingness to separate her passion
for music from her passion for human dignity. A folk singer by content,
a cabaret singer by style, a humorist by contrast, a healer by spirit,
and a humanitarian by nature, a Holly Near concert is a musical delight.
She is a skilled performer and an outspoken ambassador for peace.
Whether on stage at Carnegie Hall or on a flatbed truck at a rally,
Holly is singing for our lives.
Over the years, Holly's powerful anthems have captured the mood of many
movements and now her voice and messages are no less urgent than those
of 35 years ago. As one fan put it, "She is a divine mix of Pete Seeger
and Judy Garland!" Holly Near is one of the finest political singers of
our time. Her powerful voice, charming sense of humor, and extraordinary
skill as an entertainer provide a comfortable and challenging home for
ideas and activism.
Her latest recording, Show Up, is a pointed and provocative look at
where society sits today-in a new millennium and going into the fourth
year of a U.S. led foreign war. From her poignant treatment of Jackson
Browne's scathing indictment of the big business war machine in Lives in
the Balance to an ironic rewrite of Laura Love's I Want You Gone, no
topic is sacred to Holly Near. War, peace, love, family, corporation,
government, addiction- they all come under her scrutiny. But Holly is
not merely an observer. She invites audiences to take a stand- to take
the higher road of vision, peace, perspective, and leadership-and to
Show Up.

later, having sung 'Peace Salaam Shalom' and 'All We Are Saying' the
entire time."--Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize Winning Author
Sotto Voce
Sotto Voce is an auditioned small ensemble within One Voice Chorus. The
name of the group is actually a play on words: sotto voce is a musical
term meaning "to sing or play in half voice." One Voice chorus brings
gay, lesbian, transgender, and gay-supportive people together to
celebrate our lives in song. Since 1989, when five Charlotteans met to
form the chorus, One Voice has grown into an important source of
strength for our community. The 25 singers at our first rehearsal in
January 1990 have grown to become a joyous and dedicated group of over
50 singers, support members and paid musical staff.
