Our Radiant Ego

The human ego is one of the most beautiful and essential aspects of our spiritual design. The ego is the individualized point of awareness through which the Christ Presence expresses Itself as a unique and unrepeatable human being. It is not a flaw, nor a barrier to spiritual growth. Rather, it is a sacred instrument — a way for Infinite Mind to become personal, relational, expressive, and creative.

What is the ego? The ego is the organizing center of our personal identity. It is the “I” that learns, chooses, remembers, and interacts with the world. It allows us to say “I AM,” and to bring our divine nature into form. Without the ego, there would be no personality, no preferences, no sense of purpose, no free-will choices and no way for Spirit to experience life through us. The ego may not be operating during dreaming, since we don’t seem to be aware of ourselves when we dream.

What does the ego do? The ego interprets experience, forms meaning, and helps us navigate relationships, responsibilities, and choices. It creates coherence in our lives, shaping our story and guiding our growth. The ego allows us to develop healthy boundaries, emotional intelligence, and compassion. It is the part of us that learns from experience and evolves through spiritual practice.

What can the ego not do? The ego cannot replace the deeper Observer which is the spiritual Self. It cannot provide ultimate peace, wisdom, or wholeness — these come from the indwelling Christed Spirit. But the ego can receive spiritual guidance, express divine ideas, and serve as a faithful partner in our unfolding consciousness.

Why is so much information about the ego negative? Much of modern writing focuses on the ego’s distortions — fear, defensiveness, or separation. These are not the ego’s essence; they are simply signs that the ego has received thoughts from the Observer — which it is allowed to do through Free Will. The ego is like a filing cabinet, partially filled with more space left. When illumined by positive Truth, the ego becomes a channel for love, creativity, and service.

• William James, The Principles of Psychology — distinguished the “I” and the “Me.”

• Sigmund Freud, The Ego and the Id — introduced the structural model, i.e. the conscious and the subconscious.

• Carl Jung, Two Essays on Analytical Psychology — described the ego as the center of consciousness.

• Charles Fillmore, The Revealing Word — explored the “personal consciousness” as an instrument of Spirit.

In Unity, we bless the ego. We honor it as a divine gift—the sacred doorway through which we become what we are.
