Unity Jargon
Much of Unity’s traditional vocabulary has become “Unity jargon.” These terms were clear in the 1930s–1980s metaphysical context, but many modern listeners (even spiritually open ones) don’t immediately understand them. The concepts are still powerful — but the language often needs updating so people can grasp the meaning without needing a metaphysics dictionary. (Note that there is the Metaphysical Dictionary.)
Unity’s early teachers (Fillmores, Cady, Freeman, Butterworth) used language shaped by:
-
early‑20th‑century metaphysics
-
Christian mystical vocabulary
-
New Thought psychology
-
a strong emphasis on inner states of consciousness
Today’s listeners often come from an up-dated place:
-
mindfulness and neuroscience
-
interfaith spirituality
-
trauma‑informed psychology
-
secular or post‑church backgrounds
The ideas still resonate — but the phrasing can feel abstract, archaic, or overly “churchy.” Updating the language helps people understand that Unity is practical, compassionate, and consciousness‑based — not just esoteric.
