Let There Be Peace on Earth

Within Christianity, “Dona nobis pacem” and “Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis” appear in places where tradition leans toward prayer, chant, and the deep longing for harmony.

• The Mass (Roman Catholic and some Anglican/Lutheran traditions) Dona nobis pacem forms the final petition of the Agnus Dei, “Behold, the Lamb of God…” (John 1:29) sung just before Communion. It’s often set as a gentle, pleading round or chant, inviting the congregation into a posture of peace.

• Classical sacred music Composers like Bach, Mozart, Haydn, and Palestrina set “Dona nobis pacem” as the closing movement of their Masses. In these settings, it becomes a soaring musical prayer for peace that has shaped Western sacred music for centuries.

• Liturgical seasons emphasizing the peace of Advent, Christmas, and times of communal reflection often include Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis, drawn from the angelic proclamation “Glory to God…” (Luke 2:14). It’s used in hymns, choral anthems, and readings that center on goodwill and divine peace.

• Ecumenical and interfaith services Because the phrases are simple, ancient, and universal, they appear in peace vigils, memorial services, and gatherings where Christians of many different traditions come together.

Latin to English translation:
Dona nobis pacem.
Grant us peace.
Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
And on earth, peace to people of good will.

Literary expansion:
Dona nobis pacem
Let peace be given to us—
Not as a possession,
But as a quieting of the heart,
A soft light settling over our days.

Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis
And upon the wide earth,
May peace rest gently

On all who walk with willing hearts,
On all who choose kindness,
On all who labor toward the good.

Unity‑style Interpretation:
Dona nobis pacem
Peace is given to us now.
It rises from within,
The quiet truth of our divine nature
Unfolding in calm assurance.
We accept the peace that already lives in us,
And we let it guide our thoughts,
Our words, our steps.

Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis
And upon this earth,
Peace flows through all who choose goodwill,
All who open their hearts to compassion,
All who remember that love is the law of their being.
May every willing soul
Become a living blessing of harmony,
A radiant center of calm in the world.
